The Holidays are Over?

No, surely not yet! Does anyone feel like they blinked and the holiday break was over? I do! We had a wonderful time visiting all sides of our family and now that mine has “officially” grown to include Michael’s side, we did some extra traveling and holiday cheering this year. I have been so blessed to be welcomed into his side with open arms and lots of love this year! Even though I already felt very much a part of his family before our wedding made us officially family, it was nice celebrate knowing it’s permanent ūüôā

But I know what you all are itching to find out…WHAT KINDA LOOT DID YOU GET? No worries, I’m excited to share! Since adjusting to a tighter {husband approved} budget, I haven’t done as much shopping this year as I have typically done in the past. That means I was really excited to get some stylish things on my list!

Including…

steve madden riding boots

Riding Boots: Intyce: Steve by Steve Madden

Gold Watch: Guess

Ballet Flats: Kingdom by Steve Madden

 COACH Poppy rollerball

Coach Poppy by Poppy Rollerball

And with some Christmas money from my grandparents… (will I EVER get too old for that? Never!)

Paige Peg Jeans from Nordstrom Rack (Yay for sales!)

faux fur clutch coat

Faux Fur Clutch Coat: Damsalle from Nordstrom Rack (holla!)

I’ll share some of the other gifts in later posts but I am one happy {and stylish} camper for now. And because I missed you over the holidays…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of my readers! Thank you for listening to be blabber about the things I love and whatever excites me. Part of my New Years Resolution is to add more structure and consistency to my blog. Sit tight because I hope to continue to get better!

Je T’aime Paris

To me, Paris and the countryside of France just have a certain je ne sais quoi. I don’t know what has always drawn me to French culture, but ever since I can remember I’ve been in love with it. I was lucky enough to visit France when I was 14. My family went on a trip to Europe and we got to visit Paris, Normandy, Versailles and drive through the French countryside. I thoroughly enjoyed myself then, but I’d do anything to go back and do it all over again. I took French in high school and, unfortunately, walked away with very little more than the basics of the language. BUT since it’s such a big part of how I’ve developed my style. I’ll share my favorite French inspired everything….

French Phrases

  • Moi – for being sassy
  • Quel dommage! Means, “what a pity!”
  • Qu’est-ce que c’est? Translates to “what is this?”
  • Sacrebleu! Translates to “holy blue!” but is an exclamation of horror or shock. I’m pretty sure I picked this up from The Little Mermaid, you know, when the French chef tries to cook Sebastian?

My favorite movies set in Paris

  • Amelie–¬†Michael actually told me about this movie. He watched it in a college design class and it is probably my all time favorite movie. There’s very little I can say other than YOU MUST SEE IT! Seriously. It’s amazing. And it’s all in French so you have to read subtitles, but if my all sports loving dude of a husband enjoyed it, you know that it’s gotta be pretty great. Also, the soundtrack is excellent.
  • Sabrina – Though not set entirely in Paris, it’s an integral part in both the 1954 and 1995 versions. Love this movie!
  • Funny Face¬†–¬†Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn plus fashion. Need I say more?
  • Passport to Paris – Hey, the Olsen twins were awesome back in the day and it was pretty epic when they ran around Paris. Just sayin.
  • The Phantom of the Opera – Set in the back staircases and secret passageways of the historic Garnier Opera house, it’s a dark classic! I’ve also seen the broadway play – it’s life changing. And Gerard Butler is the phantom in the movie. Hot.

{random fact: I listened to the broadway soundtrack on the way to school most mornings from age 7-10. Mom always played it – literally at the request of us and our carpoolers. I’m not kidding}

French Architecture

Just. Look. It’s breathtaking.
Anddd just for fun you should check out¬†French Wedding Blogs¬†– those pretty details seem so much fancier because they’re French. My co-worker {and friend} Sarah showed me this. You should check out her lovely blog! She has great DIY, style, and decor stuff over at¬†Tulle and Trinkets!
I could go on forever about the art, and the music, and the food and….well I could go on forever, but I won’t. And to you all I say, “Bonne soir√©e!” Which means, have a nice evening!

Things I need to do more of…

So…I’ve been thinking…

I’ve been lazy lately. And while I can’t say it’s entirely a bad thing, as wedding planning left me a tad exhausted, I now have TIME and ENERGY to do some things I’ve been meaning to for quite awhile. In no particular order…

  1. Exercise. I’m seeing yoga in my future…or maybe Zumba?
  2. Wake up earlier – i.e. no hitting the alarm 3 times or climbing back in bed after I let the dog out. It’s the WORST habit!
  3. Read more.
  4. Watch less TV. It’s kind of stupid how much time I waste in front of that thing. And we don’t even have CABLE!
  5. Make more phone calls to friends and relatives – and get back to writing more thank you notes for sweet little nothings.
  6. Do more last minute and unexpected things! Nothing specific, just get up and DO more.
  7. Practice baking for the holidays – I can cook, but baking is a whole n’other ball game.
  8. KEEP BLOGGING! I’ve had a 4 in a row streak y’all. This could mean business.
  9. Get off of the computer in the evenings (except for blogging). Because really, I spend all day in front of 2 computer screens. I need to back away.
  10. Plan and host a meal for my grandparents. They need to see my new place!
  11. Get things hung up on my wall – they’re scary bare.
  12. Take more pictures! Of anything and everything. And get them up on the blog!

I’m going to revisit this list in about a month and see my progress. Keep me accountable, would you readers? I’d love to see your list of things you’d like to accomplish in the next month or so. It’s so much easier when you get it all out of your head and down on paper. Just like goals for work, having these things in front of you staring back at you while you go about your day to day business is pretty good motivation. Give it a try!

Aaaaannnnnddd we’ll close with my latest obsession courtesy of Beyonce. Just because.

Little Luxuries

It always seems that the more you’re concentrating on not spending money¬†the more you think about spending some. I guess it’s like a diet – just involving shopping. As my husband (yeah! husband!) and I work on melding our newlywed lives together, a big portion of the “melding” has been the way we deal with finances. While I respect and trust my husband and his ability to guide our financial future, I’m keenly aware of how different our definitions of “necessary purchase” are. So, while I adjust to saving more and spending less (psh, like saving for a house is more important than having this watch?????), I’ve been trying to indulge myself in little luxuries.

Mind you, these aren’t life changing, but focusing on enjoying “the little things” can be really rewarding. So here are six fabulous ways to indulge yourself while on a budget…

1. Paint your nails

While I’d prefer a mani-pedi from the nail salon ANY day, it’s one of the those extra costs that can be easily cut. Plus doing it yourself gives you some quiet pamper time. Easy, free, and you’ll look fabulous dahling!

2. Have a glass of vino

It could be a bottle of three buck chuck for all I care, it feels luxurious. Settle in for the night with a nice glass of wine and a book, or a glass of wine and a nice chit-chat with your best friends. It’s the kind of pick me up that you can indulge in at the end of a long day. There’s really no need for an excuse with this little luxury – you could be having the best day of your life or the crappiest and most stressful. A glass of wine will refresh and relax you JUST long enough to kick your feet up for awhile.

3. Listen to classical music

I prefer the¬†French¬†variety when I’m feeling extra classy.¬†La Vie En Rose will take you right out of your pinching pennies life and straight to a classy cafe in Paris. Think Sabrina – not the teenaged witch – the Audrey Hepburn version. Trust me, daydreaming is healthy ūüėČ

4. Read a book

I cannot think of anything more relaxing that snuggling up on the couch or underneath the covers and reading a book. Books provide the best kind of getaway and relax you in a way the television cannot. It involves peace and quiet – a rare and luxurious thing in our crazy lives.

[had to include the photo from Vogue’s Michelle Williams spread – it epitomizes what I describe]

5. Cook a fresh and healthy meal

Clearly, dining out is not in the budget. Luckily, cooking at home is not only healthier for you – it’s cheaper! Cooking for one or two (as most young professionals and newlyweds do) leaves you with leftovers that beat that of the frozen kind any day. There are millions of recipes online, the inspiration is endless! Not only is it fun to flex your cooking muscle, it’s relaxing and dare I say, romantic!

Pro Tip: Combine this with #2 and you’ll have a brilliant combo. Molto bene!

See? Isn’t that easy? And best of all, they’re free. Or almost free. Get to it!

Engagement Photos are Here!!!

If you don’t know me personally, or follow my facebook or twitter you MAY not have seen our gorgeous engagement photos yet! I can’t resist sharing with yet another audience so here I am shamelessly bragging and showing again. You know that’s why people have blogs, right?

Anyway, we can’t even take the credit for these photos – our AWESOME photographer Lang, of¬†Lang Thomas Photography, made this so easy for us. Michael and I aren’t into getting our picture taken and were a little bit nervous about the shoot – but it was so fun and really easy. He drove up from Louisville to take our pics at the Indy Museum of Art (thanks Lang!). The weather, the setting, the lighting, turned out so perfectly! And Lang picked it up so effortlessly. Now we’ve just got 101 days until the wedding. YAY!!!!!!!!

PS. Please note how handsome my future hubby is. And adorable-but that’s not a manly enough compliment for him ūüôā

Head over to his site to check out more of the shoot but here are my fav’s:

Site Redesign

Hello ladies and gentlemen! So…it’s been awhile. My attention has been elsewhere and I apologize for my extended absence. BUT as you may notice, I’ve had a mini-overhaul! My wonderful husband-to-be graciously made me my very own logo! He’s had it designed for awhile and I’ve been holding off on putting it up and finally…here it is! What do you think? I love it. He’s wonderful. ¬†So wonderful that I will shamelessly plug his amazing self-designed website michaelthaman.com¬†that showcases all of his designs. He’s currently looking for a graphic and print design job in Indianapolis so he can relocate and be with me before our wedding in September. If you have any heads up or interest shoot them our way ūüôā

I’ve got some exciting posts planned for this week so stay tuned. I’m back and ready for action! If you have any suggestions or requests for posts just holler at me!

xoxo
