Latest Obsession…

Have you ever watched makeup vloggers? Basically, makeup vloggers post tutorials and their favorite products on Youtube. Some of them are total crap, some are entertaining, and the rest are sheer genius. I’d consider myself to be pretty well versed on makeup – whether it’s an application technique or a brand, I know a fair amount about makeup. But watching makeup vloggers has taught me so much more! Specifically, I’ve learned how to blend shades together and accentuate my facial features in the most flattering way.

Here’s my all time favorite makeup blogger, Alli! Check out her Youtube channel and some of her videos. I love how she blends color and favors natural and fresh looks. I got some makeup palettes and a brush set for Christmas and I’ve been putting them to good use! I also took some cues from her makeup organization videos and got my makeup all sorted out in acrylic trays from The Container Store.

I’ve found the best way to learn how to do makeup is to practice! You can read and watch techniques, but the only way you’ll really get the hang of it is to try. You know I’ve never grown out of playing dress up, and I’m pretty sure I’ll never grow out of playing in makeup. Have fun and learn something new by trial and error.

And I’ll leave you with my favorite tutorial from Alli for a great every day look:

Julep Giveaway!

Hey ladies! I was so excited when I was contacted to do a review and giveaway for Julep! I wasn’t familiar with the brand, so I did a little bit of research and was thrilled to find out about their products. I’m a nail polish JUNKY and they have a great selection of polish colors, hand and nail treatments and fun extras. Check out my thoughts and find out how to enter to win your own giftbox!

Similar to Birchbox, members of Julep Maven can sign up for a monthly delivery of customized nail and beauty treats. It’s a surprise each month and for just $19.99 (for over $40 worth of products), it’s quite the deal!

Julep sent me a box to review for you guys and here’s what I received:

Here’s what I thought: I’m a self-admitted nail polish snob okay? I am picky about color, consistency, and longevity of all nail polish I wear. I was SO impressed with Julep’s quality! The nail polish was thick, covered well, looked great and lasted at least 4 solid days before chipping. I swear to you it lasted through multiple dish washes, wrapping presents (and peeling away pesky price tags that ALWAYS ruin nails), and tons of other things. This stuff has serious staying power. I’m currently wearing Whitney on my nails and Nicole on my toes, which were perfect for the peep toe pumps I wore to a holiday party this past weekend! Also love the hand scrub – it’s supposed to make your hands look younger, I don’t really care about that now, but it does make them really smooth!
Overall, I loved the product and the thought of receiving a surprise box every month.  Julep also cares about their products as well as giving back through their organization. They told me, “Unlike many traditional brands, all of our polishes are free of DBP, toluene, formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin- but beautiful and long lasting nonetheless. We are also “Powered By Girlfriends“ meaning we value and support all the girlfriends in our lives. In fact, we are proud to donate $1 from every Julep Nail Vernis sale to organizations that empower women!” Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Here’s how you can win our very own Julep Maven gift box:

Head over to the Julep website, take their “What’s your Style” quiz and tell me what you are, OR Pick your favorite color from the lineup and leave it in the comment section below. Contest open to US and Canada residents only. Contest starts TODAY and ends Monday Jan 2, 2012.

Also, if you LOVE Julep (I promise you will), use the code: SASSYSTYLISTA at checkout and you will receive the first Julep Maven Sneak Peek box for just $5!

*I’ll use a random number generator to pick the winner 🙂

These are a few of my favorite things

It’s about time for me to share some fashionable (and admittedly, some not so fashionable) favorites. Here they are!

Favorite Summer Shoe anything that’s a wedge, preferably espadrilles (the higher the better!) OR embellished boho-chic flats

Favorite Spring 2011 Trend 70s kick back and maxi length OR nude nails

Favorite Skirts J Crew “No. 2 Pencil Skirt” – they  know how to make a good pencil skirt!

Favorite Jeans I have a new one! Paige Skyline Peg Leg jeans. I got a pair at Nordstrom Rack and they are the best ever

Store to buy fashion I’ve thought about this for awhile and it’s impossible to choose one. I love Nordstrom/Nordstrom RACK, Macy’s (but the one in Indy SUCKS), Dillards (none in Indy), J Crew – mostly sale or outlet (I’m not made of money people), TJ Maxx when I’m in the mood for a fashion hunt

Designer discount web store GILT, Rue La La, Ideeli or Hautelook

Facial Cleanser Cetaphil Cleanser

Hair Product Toss up between Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic (does wonders for baby-fine hair) and Aveda’s Light Elements Smoothing Fluid (this stuff tames my fly-aways without looking greasy)

Soap Dove Bar Soap

Bronzer Benefit Hoola, no shimmer makes this the best for some color

Concealer Benefit Erase Paste

Lip Balm Burt’s Bees…you just can’t go wrong

Store to buy beauty Sephora. Hands down, no competition, wins every time. I could spend a years salary in that place. No joke. But don’t worry (Michael/Mom/Dad), I wouldn’t. But I assure you, it wouldn’t be a challenge.

Junk Food Cheetos (embarrassing) or cupcakes from the Flying Cupcake in Indianapolis (heavenly!)

Health Food Steamed Asparagus, Hummus, Red Peppers, or Fresh Berries

Vacation Spot a peaceful spot with sun, family, and relaxation – Hilton Head, SC is a fav with lots of family memories

Thing I need to do more of: READ! I love to read but rarely sit down and do it

Way to unwind: Spend a hot afternoon floating on a noodle at the lake with my friends and a beer (not so classy but very real)

Gum Stride Spearamint (but Winterfresh is a close tie)

Part of the morning: Although MUCH more enjoyable on a Saturday, I love waking up before work and having enough time to sit and slowly drink coffee while I read emails, the news, or the paper. Or…when I read nothing at all.

New obsession Mommy blogs. Mommy bloggers write the most hilarious, real life, and can’t-make-this-stuff-up blogs. I love their honesty and openness. It’s so refreshing!

Place to drop $100 before I know it Target. Do ya feel me??

Coke/Soda/Pop (whatever YOU call it) Diet Coke with a lemon wedge=perfect. And it’s so fashionable, Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel Designer) put his image on it.

Want to know my favorite of a particular item? Agree/Disagree with my list? I wanna hear about it ya’ll!

And also check out the other favorite’s list. I have a lot of favorites…guess I’m pretty easy to please 🙂

Perfume Perfection

I LOVE perfume. It can single-handedly transform you into a sassy confident woman with one spritz. I won’t lecture readers with over-spraying, other than to say, too much is a HUGE turnoff and turns sassy and confident into desperate and cheap. So don’t.

Choosing the right perfume is all about chemistry. Literally.  Different perfumes smell different on everyone.  Did you know that? Chemicals react with your unique body and can emit a different scent, depending on how it mixes.  That’s why trial and error is crucial.  Besides the fact that I have a picky fiance (his nose only likes certain scents, and everything else “stinks”–STINKS? Or it’s not your favorite?…whatever), I wanted to research which perfumes to invest in.

The best perfumes, not body splash, cost money. And I won’t be wasting $50-$75 on something I’m not 100% positive will work with my chemistry.

For Christmas I got the Sephora favorites deluxe fragrance sampler.  Tiny samples of tons of different scents to play with. In addition to the sampler, you can select a larger sample of your favorite for some more trial time and then be SURE you’re investing the right way. Best. Deal. EVER!

Sephora Favorites Deluxe Fragrance Sampler $50

Wanna know my faves?  I like girly, light, floral, slightly musky, but still fresh and light scents. Got that? Ha, probably not. So here’s the breakdown…

Versace Bright Crystal

Sephora’s Product Description:

Bright Crystal
Inspired by a mixture of Donatella Versace’s favorite floral fragrances, Bright Crystal is a fresh, sensual blend of refreshing chilled yuzu and pomegranate mingled with soothing blossoms of peony, magnolia, and lotus flower, warmed with notes of musk and amber.
Iced Accord, Yuzu, Pomegranate, Peony, Magnolia, Lotus Flower, Acajou, Vegetal Amber, Musk.
Sheer. Sensual. Luminous.

Juicy Couture Couture Couture

Sephora’s Product Description:

Couture Couture
Introducing Juicy Couture’s ‘it girl’ fragrance. Where she goes, the party follows. Her rule? Do the don’ts—show off, be loud, spoil yourself, talk to strangers—and love life! This scent opens with a top of succulent pink grape accord frolicking in a field of natural orange flower and mandarin. A heart of blushed plum and honeysuckle flirts with bold star jasmine. At back, creamy sandalwood lazes with moist amber in a haze of rich vanilla. Mix it with love and make the world smell good.

Pucci Miss Pucci

Sephora’s Product Description:

Miss Pucci

Youthful, fresh, and seductive, miss Pucci is undeniably modern while opening a window to the retro Pucci lifestyle of vibrant color, perpetual motion, and sun-soaked destinations. This sparkling musky floral comes alive with the elegance of magnolia and the lightness of Sicilian winter lemon, playfully blossoming to heart notes of Turkish rose and seductive Comoros ylang-ylang. Its base lingers on woody Texas cedar, powdered iris from Florence, and the delicate sensuality of white musk. The bottle, created by Parisian designer Ora Ito, uses kaleidoscopic ribbons of color to playfully tie together feelings of freedom, sophistication, and beautiful style that belong to the quintessential “Pucci girl.”
Sicilian Lemon, Turkish Rose, Comoros Ylang-Ylang, Tunisian Orange Blossom, Arabian Jasmine, Texas Cedar, Florentine Iris, Musk.
Chic. Feminine. Energetic.

Fun Bath Products

Basin White Pink Sugar Shea Salt Scrub $35

Product Description: “Revitalizing sea salts are blended with shea butter to create a thick, creamy body scrub that will gently exfoliate and moisturize, leaving smooth pink sugar scented skin.”

This sugar scrub not only polishes away dry and rough skin, it leaves your skin with a nice balmy sheen. AND the scent is good enough to eat; sweet, but not overly juvenile.  You can really feel the shea butter sink into your skin. It feels glorious to get out of the shower, dab lightly to dry off, and then essentially be lotioned up!

Unfortunately, Basin White only has stores in Las Vegas and Disney World at the Grand Floridian Spa (two highly luxurious and fun locales, how fitting!), but you can order any of their products online.  They have a bevy of milk baths, bath bombs, bath perfumes…basically, all of the best bath goodies! They make great gifts or the perfect treat for spoiling yourself.  The tub of sugar shea scurb lasts for a long time, but each time you use it you’ll feel like you just went to the spa! Perfect 🙂

Chapped? Find relief…

Cold and dry winter weather can leave even the most hydrated beauty queen feeling a little chapped.  Here are my two favorite products for keeping skin and lips smooth, silky, and protected from the elements!

Aveda Hand Relief $20

Not the cheapest hand cream out there but in my opinion, the BEST by far.  The tube really does last awhile and you only need a dime sized dollop of this thick and creamy goodness.  It smothers on and literally coats your hand with rich moisture.  It’s like pulling on a pair of silky smooth gloves over your dry chapped hands. AH-MAY-ZING! Plus it smells heavenly and fresh…

Aveda’s product description: “Incredibly rich moisture therapy soothes dry, chapped hands—leaving them noticeably softer and smoother. Hydrating plant emollients, humectants, exfoliating fruit acids and anti-oxidants—including vitamins A and E—help diminish signs of aging and provide optimal relief. Increases moisture levels and elasticity in skin with continued use.”

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm $3

My lips give the most trouble during the winter months.  Burt’s Bees lip balm, a favorite of everyone-everywhere, is my solid go to for ridding my dry pealy lips (which is never a good look). I love both their regular lip balm and tinted lip balm.  The tinted balm is the perfect combo of moisturizing lip protection and color. AND the added peppermint oil is the most refreshing way to jazz up your lips!

Burt’s Product Description: Give your lips the soothing feeling they deserve. This natural lip balm is loaded with coconut and sunflower oils, rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, to nourish, condition and soften lips. Beeswax seals in hydration. We’ve even added peppermint oil for a refreshing tingle.

If you’re using these products and still feeling dry, remember to drink water throughout the day.  You’d be surprised at how much a few extra glasses of water in your diet will keep your skin, hair, and nails more moisturized.  Now…go forth and be moisturized!
