J’adore Dior!!!! Spring 2011 Haute Couture show in Paris was one of the most personally inspiring fashion shows I’ve seen in a long time. Albeit, I only saw it thanks to a video clip (thank you modern technology!), but the photos alone are so brilliant and beautiful they literally make me want to cry.
Everything about this Dior Haute Couture line is so classic. “Haute Couture”, which stands for “high sewing” or “high dressmaking” and refers to custom made or custom fit clothing. The term came about in mid-nineteenth century when Charles Frederick Worth, a Parisian dressmaker, coined the term for his high class clientele and their special order dresses. In modern terms Haute Couture is still considered a protected name that can only be used by select fashion houses that meet well-defined standards.
In other words, only the best of the best, and certainly the most EXPENSIVE and RARE fashions can be labeled Haute Couture. It’s big time. And Dior is a classic.
All of these ensembles (and of course the makeup and hair) are reminiscent of Dior’s first splash onto the fashion scene in the early 50’s. The cropped and fitted jackets, the full skirts (to celebrate no more fabric restrictions-WWII was over!), glamorous hats and long evening gloves. It is the epitome of glamour and style. I’m in love with every piece of this collection!
Can’t tell you enough how obsessed I am with this collection. It reminds me of classic Barbie gowns, or Grace Kelly, or Betty Draper on Mad Men. Nothing can top the sophistication or glamour!
